
Ph.D. Tuija Hautala-Hirvioja
(b. 1957)
Has been a professor of art history in the Faculty of Art and Design of the University of Lapland in Rovaniemi, Northern Finland, since 2004.
Her research interests include art and cultural history in Finnish Lapland, fine art in the North Calotte area, Sámi art, the portrayal of Sámi and northern landscapes in Finnish art.
She has written ten books, and almost two hundred articles and essays on Northern art and culture compiled works, journal and exhibition catalogues.
Hautala-Hirvioja often collaborates with Rovaniemi art Museum and the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation Collection, one of the largest collections of Finnish contemporary art.
She had curated several exhibitions and edited twenty books. Before becoming a professor, she worked for nine years as a lecture in art history at the same university and as a curator at the Aine Art Museum in Tornio from 1986 to 1995 and as an art teacher (1984–1986 and 1981–1982).
