A Home Near the Precipice – Painting Practices in Finland Today is a project involving a series of exhibitions, seminars, artists’ talks, podcasts and publications focusing on the more unorthodox and inquisitive strand of contemporary painting in Finland. The project, curated by artist/curator Misha del Val, is aimed at invigorating dialogue about the current tone, status, capacity and potential of painting practices in Finland at present.
“A Home Near the Precipice – Painting Practices in Finland Today” starts off with an exhibition and a public program of events in Rovaniemi in the fall of 2023. The exhibition, held in Gallery Napa and Studio Mustanapa, Rovaniemi, from 23rd of September to 17th of October 2023, presents the artistic work of seven artists living in Finland and working chiefly within the medium of painting: Anna Tuori, Camilla Vuorenmaa, Eeva Peura, Henri Hagman, Konsta Huusko, Liisa Karintaus and Reima Nevalainen.
The project encompasses a public program of events running in parallel to this exhibition, including a day seminar in Korundi, Rovaniemi Art Museum, on 22nd of September (the same day of the opening of the exhibition). In this seminar, participating artists will offer presentations on the idiosyncrasies of their respective art practices, and will hold an open conversation with the audience about the condition of painting in Finland today (in Finnish). Participation in this seminar is free and open to everyone. Online participation is also possible.
