The freely running melt waters hardly remember its icy chains. However, the signs of ice are present everywhere, whether as sags created by the massive icy constructions or as the memory about the world sealed in the drop of the water. The crystal of ice and it´s cousin from summer, a drop of water, both mirror the nature around but in a distortive manner. In the glitter of light and water the spectator faces the visions created by one’s imagination. Water and ice are united in the similar manner as life and death, as light and shadow, living and lifeless.

For years Eija Timonen has used ice as a central theme in her images. She creates temporal and spatial visions on the icy covers of the lakes or in studio-like surroundings. The means of her artistic expression cover as well photographic techniques as mixed techniques, resulting for example to wide gobelin-resembling paper cut outs. In recent years, she has collaborated with textile and fine artists and her images have been seen in prints, high fashion clothes and tapestries and in several solo- and group exhibitions. She is also a published author of several books, manuscripts and multimedia. Timonen is an emerita professor of media studies at the University of Lapland and an adjunct professor (a docent) at Aalto University in the Department of Film.
