Gallery Napa, from November 18 through December 12
Leena Reittu explores the unsustainable relationship between the environment and overconsumption of human society through sculpture, photography and video. The video work Sawdust, mixed with snow, fingertips meet the wounded bark was filmed in the Pirkkola forest, Helsinki. A one-hectare forest plot was cut down in spring 2021, even critically endangered moss species; Buxbaumia viridis, also known as the green shield-moss was found from the forest. Unlike in Southern Finland, clear cut areas in Eastern and Northern Finland are bigger and effects on biodiversity are more extensive. Through her works, Reittu criticises the anthropocentric ideology while expressing sorrow over disappearing ecosystems.
The wooden sculptures on display are made from waste wood left by forestry vehicles. After the exhibition, the sculptures are taken back to the place where the wood was found, allowing them to continue the natural process of decay, thus providing a home for various lichens, mosses, fungi and insects.
Opening of the exhibition at Gallery Napa on Friday the 17th of November, from 6 to 8 p.m.
