The project “The ‘De-arcticfication’ in Nordic Arts” aims at invigorating regional identity, promoting cultural pride and fostering cultural resilience in the Nordic Arctic region. We share perspectives on the Nordic Arctic as a place to live, work and raise our children, culturally able and robust. The project includes several elements such as Nordic Co-Curatorial practice, ‘Wiping the Ice-Cream Off Your Face’ -exhibition is curated by Misha del Val (Fl) and Andreas Hoffmann (NO/Greenland – Arctic Culture Lab) and campaign for De-arcticfication.
We promote a debate on the significance of contemporary Arctic culture and its place within Nordic culture, reconsider notions about the North outside the mainstream, conventional way of thinking, and allow the North to find and speak its own voice, in a process we are calling ‘De-arctification’.
‘Wiping the Ice-Cream Off Your Face’ -exhibition presents Nordic artists from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Greenland, Faroe Islands and Aland, plus northern Russia, and a selection of artists from the Artists Association of Lapland. At then end of the exhibition we produce a variety of open events that will allow online participation too.
The workshop on sense of Arctic in the Gallery Valo on 11th August is held by artist-designer Alina Korotovskaya. The idea is to create a personalized humanised version of the Arctic. Participants will paint a paper doll according to their vision of arctic and arctic issues, the process of visualisation and conversation about it will help to put into words their concerns and hopes and share them with others. Workshop will be held in English and Finnish and Russian will be spoken in aid.
Support our cause to wipe ice-cream off your face! The Artists Association of Lapland raised discussions on Arctification and dialogue on De-Arctification through arts.
The project ”’De-arcticfication’ in Nordic Arts” funded by the Nordic Cultural Fund, The Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, the Nordic Institute of Greenland. Collaborators of the project are the he Artists Association of Lapland, the University of Lapland, The Arctic Culture Lab and the Rovaniemi Art Museum.
