Annina Mannila – Paluu

“In this exhibition I use photography, video and installations to explore the fickle nature of memories. Images are printed and projected onto different materials: paper, glass, translucent fabric and water.

The project is based on documentary photographs taken in the surroundings of my summer residence during more than ten years. The title Paluu translates to ‘return’.”

As research has shown, memories change over time – actually they get altered every time we recall them. The process resembles playing the broken telephone game. The more we reminiche, the further the original memory of the event escapes.

Memory is a trickster: memories fade, transform, get confused with other memories and the stories that surround us.

Documentary photograph is not a quarantee of truth, either. Meaning of a photograph is always defined by the interpreter and the context of the interpretation. The way we take and interpret photographs as “memories” is also guided by the conventions of photographic narration – the way certain situations or subjects are usually depicted.

The opening is from 6pm to 8pm on Friday, March 3rd. Welcome!
