”Heinäkuussa 2021 vierailen Valaskiven luona Tornionlaaksossa Pellon Konttajärvellä, Metelivaaran takamailla. Järven vastarannalla on isoisäni syntymäkoti ja minun lapsuuteni kesäpaikka. Tunnen oloni epämukavaksi. Vierastan kosteaa, sääskiä sikiävää rämeikköä, vaikka en ole kaukana tiestä. En ole kaukana.
Lokakuussa 2022 vietän kuukauden Pohjois-Norjan Tromssassa, vuorten keskellä. Maisemat ovat kauniit, mutta hämärä tulee aikaisin ja melkein aina sataa. Eräällä iltakävelyllä vilkaisen alas, asfaltti kiiltää katulampun valossa. Poimin kadulta pieniä sorakiviä, sellaisia ihan tavallisia.”
Näyttelyni ’Aiheita II’ käsittelee kohtaamisia kivien kanssa. Lähestyn aiheitani muun muassa piirtämisen ja kuvanveiston keinoin. Osa teoksista on ollut ensimmäistä kertaa esillä Galleria Sculptorin Studiossa keväällä 2024 pidetyssä samannimisessä näyttelyssä.
Olen poiminut aiheeni jalkojeni juuresta: tien pientareelta, eteisen lattialta, kengän pohjasta. Jotkut aiheet ovat konkreettisempia kuin toiset, toiset toista pysyvämpiä. Joidenkin aiheiden luullaan kestävän ikuisesti. Sitten on aiheita, jotka ennen haurastumistaan kimaltelevat, kuin olisivat arvokkaampaakin ainetta.
Katukivet, sorakivet, hiekoitusmurske, jotka on tarkoitettu liukastumista estämään tai pohjoiseen suuntaavan luontoretkeilijän jalkojen alle tehtyä polkua lujittamaan. Nekin kivet tulevat kaukaa. Nekin kivet ovat odottaneet vuosimiljoonia kannatellakseen askeleitamme häviävän hetken.
Gallerianäyttelyihin on aina vapaa pääsy. Pukukoodina avoin mieli ja kanssaolentoja kunnioittava käytös. Noudatamme turvallisemman tilan periaatteita. Osto-oletusta ei ole mutta mikäli taidehankinnat kiinnostavat, ota rohkeasti yhteyttä taiteilijaan tai gallerian henkilökuntaan niin jutellaan lisää!
Tilan esteellisyydestä: Studio Mustanapa sijaitsee Galleria Napan alakerrassa, jonne pääsee vain portaikon kautta. Galleria Napan ulko-ovella on muutama porras ja kynnys. Pyörätuoliluiska löytyy, mutta tasanne ja oviaukko eivät ole riittävän leveitä mm. isolle sähköpyörätuolille. Yläkerrassa on kynnyksellinen pieni WC. Valmistautuessasi näyttelyvierailuun ota tarvittaessa yhteyttä henkilökuntaan.
BIO
Savu E. Korteniemi on valmistunut kuvataiteen maisteriksi (KuM) vuonna 2013 Taideyliopiston Kuvataideakatemiasta, kuvanveiston osastolta. Hän asuu ja työskentelee Rovaniemellä. Korteniemen taiteellisen työskentelyn lähtökohdat ovat piirtämisessä ja kuvanveistossa, laajentuen kohti monialaisuutta ja yhdessä työskentelyn muotoja. Korteniemi lähestyy taidetta ja todellisuutta myös kirjoittamisen kautta ja hänen artikkeleitaan on julkaistu useissa kulttuurialan lehdissä. Korteniemi on myös toiminut Lapin taiteilijaseuran tuottaman kansainvälisen Young Arctic Artists -ryhmänäyttelyn kuraattorityöryhmässä vuosina 2021 ja 2023.

“In July 2021 I visit Valaskivi monolith (literally: Whale Stone) in the hinterland of Metelivaara hill, close to Konttajärvi village and lake in Torne Valley. On the opposite shore of the lake is my grandfather’s birthplace, which is also the place of my childhood summers. I feel uncomfortable in the humid, mosquito-breeding forest, even though I am not far from the road. I’m not far at all.
In October 2022, I spend a month in Tromsø, in the north of Norway, in the middle of the mountains. The scenery is beautiful, but dusk comes early and it almost always rains. On an evening walk, I glance down at the asphalt gleaming in the streetlight. I pick up some small gravel stones, just the ordinary ones.”
My exhibition Aiheita II(Subjects II) focuses on encounters with stones. I approach my topics through methods such as drawing and sculpture. Some of the works were first displayed at Gallery Sculptor’s Studio in the exhibition of the same name, held in the spring of 2024.
I have picked these subjects from the roots at my feet: from the roadside, the hallway floor, the sole of my shoe. Some topics are more concrete than others, some more permanent. Some topics are believed to last forever. Then there are topics that, before they crumble, sparkle as though they are made of something more precious.
Paving stones, gravel, sand grit, intended to prevent slipping or to reinforce a path under the feet of a north-bound hiker. Even those stones come from afar. Those stones have waited for millions of years to support our steps for a vanishing moment.
Gallery exhibitions are always free to visit. The dress code is an open mind and respectful behavior towards fellow beings. We follow the Principles of a Safer Space. Regarding accessibility: Studio Mustanapa is located in the basement of Gallery Napa, which can only be accessed via a staircase. There are a few steps and a threshold at the entrance to Gallery Napa. There is a wheelchair ramp, but the landing and door frame are not wide enough for larger electric wheelchairs. BIO
Savu E. Korteniemi graduated with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in 2013 from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, the Department of Sculpture. Korteniemi lives and works in Rovaniemi, Finland. Their artistic practice originates from drawing and sculpture, expanding towards multidisciplinary expression and collaboration. Korteniemi approaches art and reality also through writing articles for several cultural magazines. In 2021 and 2023 they have worked as a co-curator of the international group exhibition Young Arctic Artists, produced by the Artists’ Association of Lapland.
In years 2023–2025 Savu E. Korteniemi’s artistic practice is supported by the Arts Promotion Center Finland.
