”Samaa maata” (Samma land, Common Ground) on Kotkassa toimineen Repin-instituutin yhteyteen perustetun UNFORMATTED-taiteilijaryhmän toinen näyttely. Se käsittelee identiteettiin, tilaan ja kotimaahan liittyviä kysymyksiä maailmantilanteessa, jota määrittävät erilaiset sodat ja konfliktit. Muurien rakentaminen, rajojen sulkeminen, rautaesiripun laskeutuminen — olemmeko matkalla kohti yhä kovenevien arvojen ja erottelujen aikakautta?
Näyttelymme ”Samaa maata” haastaa rajantekoa, jota meidän ja muiden välillä käydään. Se muistuttaa yhteistyöstä ja rajojen arbitraarisuudesta: jos rajoja voidaan piirtää, niitä voidaan myös siirtää — ja poistaa. Maa, jota jalkamme koskettavat, on sama. Maa on meille yhteinen koti. Alamme maasta ja lopulta päädymme osaksi samaa maata.
Näyttely kokoaa teoksia Suomessa ja sen ulkopuolella toimivilta taiteilijoilta, jotka tulevat eri kulttuuritaustoista, asuvat eri kaupungeissa, vaikuttavat eri alueilla ja käyttävät työskentelyssään erilaisia tekniikoita. Näyttely käsittää maalauksia, piirustuksia ja installaatioita. Yhtä kaikki heitä yhdistää sama taiteen kieli. Kuvataide, kuten musiikki, on perusolemukseltaan rajoja ylittävää ja rikkovaa.

UNFORMATTED Artist Collective – Common Ground

“Samaa maata” (Samma land, Common Ground) is the second exhibition of the UNFORMATTED artist collective established in connection with the Repin Institute, operated in Kotka. The exhibition deals with issues related to identity, territory, and homeland in a world situation defined by various wars and conflicts. Building walls, closing borders, descending of a new Iron Curtain — are we heading towards an era of ever-hardening values and distinctions?
Our exhibition “Samaa maata” challenges the boundary-making that takes place between us and others. It reminds us of cooperation and the arbitrariness of borders: if borders can be drawn, they can also be moved — and removed. The ground our feet touch is the same. The Earth is our common home. We come from the earth and eventually we return as part of the same earth.
The exhibition brings together works by artists working in and outside of Finland, who come from different cultural backgrounds, live in different cities, work in different regions and use different techniques in their practice. The exhibition includes paintings, drawings and installations. All of them are united by the same language of art. Visual art, like music, is by its very nature border crossing and breaking.
